6 Must Do’s When Designing Your Packaging
1. Communicate Your Product and Brand
The main goal of your packaging should be to communicate your brand. What do you want your consumers to know about your brand and product? The information you include on your packaging along with the style and look of the design will convince your consumer that this is the product for them.
2. Do Your Research
There are a lot of useful studies that have been conducted around consumer behavior. Read up on the most current market research and capitalize on that information. Know your market and gear every ounce of your effort into attracting them.
3. Keep Your Drafts
Through the process of designing, you will undoubtedly go through a few drafts. Hold onto them. Sometimes an idea might put you into a design rut. Look over all of your drafts and combine some of the ideas to create new and possibly better ones.
4. Maintain Focus
If you’re like most brands, you want to plaster key words and important information all over your packaging so that the consumer knows why yours is better than the others. Make a list of the most important points you would like for your customers to know about your product and make those the forefront. Find the fine line between important information and a clean and clear message.
5. Test Your Audience
Create a few options for packaging and test your audience. You don’t need a huge research firm to do this. Create some sample packaging and ask individuals (preferably those you know might by this product) what they think and ask for suggestions. You may just learn something very valuable about your packaging that you never noticed before.
6. Learn From Others
Look at the top brands in your market. What makes their packaging work? Why are they so successful? Where is their key wording placed and why? Do your best to learn from them (but avoid any sort of plagiarism!).
